Anti-war mom Sheehan to rally
in hub
By DAVE WEDGE
After threatening to chain herself to the White House,
anti-war mom Cindy Sheehan was slated to bring her crusade
to the Hub for a rally today.
Sheehan, whose soldier son Casey died in the Iraq war, has
already been arrested twice for protesting outside President
Bush's Texas home and during a "die-in'' at the White House
last month. She was supposed to take part in another
"die-in'' at the White House yesterday and was expected here
today for a protest at a Hub Army recruiting center followed
by a peace rally on the Common.
Her scheduled appearance has Republicans cringing.
"I think it's inappropriate,'' Massachusetts GOP executive
director Matt Wylie said. "I'm surprised she's still out
there. We have men and women out there defending our
country, fighting for freedom. . . . I don't think she
represents mainstream America.''
Thousands were expected to march with Sheehan, including
Dave Tree, a singer and artist whose punk rock band,
Superpower, is among several musical acts scheduled to
perform at the rally.
"They're trying to make her out to be something she's not,''
Tree said of Sheehan. "She's not a spokeswoman for the
Democratic Party. She's a mom speaking out against the war
where her son died.''
The singer/activist blasted the GOP's treatment of Sheehan.
"The people who say they support the war don't support the
troops,'' he said.
The rally is being held in recognition of the U.S. death
toll in Iraq surpassing 2,000.
"They fabricated reasons to go to war and they're
responsible for the deaths of 2,000 Americans, (tens of
thousands) of Iraqis and they've spent how many billions of
dollars,'' Tree said. "They're just too ashamed to admit
they were wrong.''
